Facebook is now The Top Reasons For Divorce,Marriage-friendly Facebook isn’t always the case. In fact, lawyers claim that the social media platform is contributing to an increase in the number of divorces.
According to a survey by Divorce Online, a UK-based legal services firm, the word “Facebook” appeared in more than a third of divorce filings last year. According to the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, over 80% of US divorce attorneys have seen an increase in the number of cases involving social media.
Gary Traystman, a divorce attorney in New London, Connecticut, says, “I see Facebook issues breaking up marriages all the time.” 60 percent of the 15 cases he handles each year in which computer history, texts, and emails are admitted as evidence involve Facebook. Requests for comment were not immediately returned by the site.
“On Facebook, affairs happen at breakneck speed,” says K. Jason Krafsky, who co-wrote the book “Facebook and Your Marriage” with his wife Kelli. Office romances and out-of-town trysts, he claims, can take months or even years to develop in the real world.
“They happen in just a few clicks on Facebook,” he says. The social network is unique among social networks and dating sites in that it allows people to re-connect with old flames while also allowing them to “friend” someone they may have only met once in passing. “It places temptation in the path of people who would never risk having an affair in a million years,” he says.
Even when extramarital affairs occur without the assistance of Facebook, experts say the site provides a deceptively comfortable forum for people to vent about their lives and inadvertently arouse spouses’ suspicions.
“The difference with Facebook is that it feels safe, innocent, and private,” says Randy Kessler, a lawyer in Atlanta who is also the current chair of the American Bar Association’s family law section.
“People willingly put a lot of incriminating information out there,” he added. “It could be something as innocuous as a restaurant check-in or a photograph posted online,” he says.
