The Government of Canada Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) were created by the Canadian government in 2008 to improve Canada’s ability to attract and retain top-tier doctoral candidates and to strengthen Canada as a global hub of excellence in research and higher education. • The applicant cannot hold a professor position at any university, even one with a Vanier quota. The Ph.D. program must provide the applicant permission to withdraw from the organization.
• The applicant must be a full-time student. The student may enrol as a part-time student if they must support their family or are disabled.
• For part-time students, a two-month study will be regarded as a one-month study when compared to a full-time student.
• Federal Government of Canada employees are only qualified if they will be on unpaid leave from their jobs.
• Candidates who are eligible may submit an application for Vanier and organization-specific Ph.D. scholarships. They must choose only one scholarship, however, if they are selected for more than one.

Documentation Required For The Vanier CGS 2022/2023

The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship 2022/ 2023 application process

Candidates who want to submit an application for the 2023–2024 Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship Competition must first finish the Vanier Preliminary Assessment package. It is necessary for students to:

• Establish a departmental deadline for submitting applications after notifying your department of your choice to participate in the Vanier competition.
• Complete the Vanier Preliminary Assessment packet and deliver it on time to the department. The FGSR won’t accept any parcels sent directly by applicants. Make sure you include all required attachments in the appropriate order.
• At the Academic Success Center, a discussion on the Vanier leadership statement will take place. Although the leadership statement is a crucial and sometimes misunderstood part of the Vanier application, its significance shouldn’t be understated. Through the writing stages, the workshop answers questions and provides insight, enabling candidates to enhance their leadership statements for maximum impact. Vanier candidates are not required to pay to attend. The attendance of other interested parties is welcomed.
• One Reference Assessment Form must be completed and signed by each applicant’s graduate advisor (or equivalent).

All students who wish to qualify for the Vanier competition must complete and submit the Vanier Preliminary Assessment Package. This package aims to identify outstanding Vanier candidates. The applications will be evaluated by the FGSR Graduate Scholarship Committee (GSC), and those selected by the committee will go on to the next step of submitting the complete application package. By the beginning of September, committee recommendations will be shared with the students (and their departments). Please don’t send a whole Vanier application package unless FGSR specifically requests it.

Applicants will be eliminated from the Vanier competition if the Preliminary Assessment Package is not submitted by the departmental deadline. Applicants that submit a complete Vanier application without first completing the preliminary assessment process will be rejected right away. No additional documents, alterations, or revisions (such as publications authorized after the deadline, for example) may be submitted after the nomination or application deadline.

Timing And Deadlines (Preliminary Vanier Competition)

• Internal dates for obtaining student draft packets are set by departments. Students must check with their Department to confirm the deadline.
• May 24, 2022, between 1:30 and 2:30 p.m. Research proposals, reference letters, and the University of Alberta’s general adjudication process will all be covered at the online information session, which is being hosted by the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research (FGSR) Award Services. This competition is open to all potential winners and is not exclusive to Vanier.
• June 9, 2022, between 1:00 and 2:20 (MST) – A virtual discussion on the Vanier leadership statement will be held by the Academic Success Center.
